Waterford names new boys basketball coach

Don Berkel is the new head coach of the Waterford High School boys basketball team. Berkel replaces Mark Capasso who stepped aside recently because of health-related issues.

Berkel coached the Lancers from 1983 to 1996 but stepped aside due to family considerations. He has coached at Clark Lane Middle School for the last five years.

"I'm very excited," Berkel said. "I resigned in 1996 because of the birth of my daughter (Kaitlyn), I wanted to be around for her. My daughter and my wife gave me their blessing and I love to coach, love the competition and the Waterford kids are terrific."

Capasso led Waterford to the Class M championship game last season but issues with his vocal chords would not allow him to both teach and coach.
